The Simple Truth

Dana @ 8:55 AM | Filed under: General

This week I had several conversations with amazing people about what they think and how they live.

The people that I had the opportunity to talk to, could not have been more different. Each one — tremendously inspiring. Each one — generous in sharing themselves. Their backgrounds could not have been more diverse and yet, fundamentally,

they were more the same then they were different.

As human beings, we are all pretty much wired the same. What makes one person laugh, will likely tickle the funny bone of many more. What makes a mother cry will probably cause a few sniffles in many others as well.

Everybody needs tobe fortified sometimes, to continue on their path. Everybody needs to be be reminded sometimes, that they ever even had a path! There are times when we need to be uplifted and empowered in a new way. Everybody needs that sometimes. And then there are times when you know that you are the one that must do the empowering. Everyone can do that, sometimes.

As human beings, we all have hopes and dreams. We want things for ourselves and for the people in our lives.

Can you see? You are not so different from me.

Not really.

Let The Scarring Begin

Dana @ 1:50 PM | Filed under: General

The bittersweet memory came rushing back to me just yesterday, as I sat thumbing through my Vanity Fair.

It was Christmas morning, and I was 10 years old, and I was about to discover –

Heaven on Earth!

My sister Denise and I had been dreaming that this could happen, but we never expected that it actually would.

We pull up to Grandma’s house where, as tradition would have it, we are presented with our gifts from Gram and the Aunts and Uncles. I didn’t notice it at the time, but there it was — the gift sitting under the tree. It was as unassuming as the eggnogg waiting on the dining room table.

As Denise and I rummage happily through our gifts we appreciate every one. And then it was time to open that gift that had been sitting under the tree.

Inside that box was the surprise that would top everything that has happened in our lives to this point!

It was from our Uncle Ralph; cool Uncle Ralph. We open the box and, there they were:

White Go-Go Boots from out of my dreams — just like the ones that Marsha Brady wore!

Oh my gosh and, yes, there is a God!

Two days later, however, it was to be that my dream would die. My father, behind our backs, I might add, returned our Marsha Brady boots in exchange for the more practical, hideous, water proof boot.

Well, better to have loved and lost then never to have loved at all.

Yes, that Christmas I did discover that there really is a God, but it was that same Christmas that I also discovered that there is a Devil, and he makes 10 year old fashion obsessed girls wear hideous –

Moon boots.

Sweet Dream

Dana @ 12:47 PM | Filed under: General

Sometimes dreams really do come true.

It’s just that sometimes the dream grows up and starts back talking with an attitiude.

The Dream will eventually start asking for things all of the time, like something to eat every five or ten minutes. And then The Dream will start leaving dirty dishes all over the place, all of the time, so that you, who have nothing better to do, will have something else to keep you from being able to sit for an entire minute without having to jump up and down, or something else to keep you from bringing just ONE THOUGHT to it’s logical conclusion…

Oh, and sometimes The Dream bugs you endlessly about what to wear to school the next day and then doesn’t want to take your suggestions but still gets fighting mad because —

“YOU ARE NOT HELPING ME COME UP WITH ANYTHING, Mom!”

Oh, and did I mention that The Dream will often request that you drop her off at parties and then will rush you quickly out the door in embarrassment, now that you have served your purpose as chauffer and escort.

Ahhh! How beautiful it is when you have a dream and it comes true, especially a BIG dream — THE DREAM

…It’s a beautiful thing.

Today however, The Dream has been behaving like a nightmare and so tonight —

The Dream

will be going to bed early…

She Sings America, Too…

Dana @ 9:30 AM | Filed under: General

Her dream in life is to become –

a housekeeper.

She dreams of a better life. She is Linda.

“With a weekly income of only $60, 43-year-old Linda says she is not living the life she envisioned for herself. A high school dropout and former drug addict, Linda admits to making some bad choices. “It all had to do with drugs,” she says. “Mom was an alcoholic. Daddy was an alcoholic. I smoke and drank at [age] nine.”

Linda has been drug-free for three years and works as a Laundromat clerk. She still expresses hope for a better future. “[I'm] just trying to raise up and do the best I can,” says Linda. “I still have hope to be able to say I’m going to achieve the goals that I want. Get my GED. Get a good job. Clean up my credit. It’s not too late.”

For Linda, becoming a cleaning woman is a step up; a step in the right direction. And, in spite of everything that she has been through, in spite of what the world might tell her, could be —

she stills hopes with all hope that her dream will come true.

She fights for the possibility that she can BECOME.

She is Linda and –

Should America belong to her too?.

Rupert Murdoch and his wife Wendi Deng, are experiencing difficulty.

Apparently, they have been trying to sell their $28 million SoHo home since June. Since June, they have only had six people in total, come to see the apartment –

and an offer has yet to be made!

Quelle Nightmare!

Meanwhile, they have just purchased a $44 million home on the Upper East Side. Now Wendi has to trade in her entire downtown attire for a wardrobe more appropriate for their new digs Uptown.

Ahh, the challenges of the — Good Life,

Quelle Domage.

But, cheer up because, speaking of “Living La Vida Loca”, finally –

Ricky Martin is back!!!

Just doing my part to keep things in perspective.

Things That Make You Go Eeeeww!!

Dana @ 9:17 AM | Filed under: General

Haste not only makes waste, it can –

THOROUGHLY GROSS YOU OUT!

While in a big hurry to make it to an appointment on time, I accidentally used Gussie’s toothbrush.

Jimminy Crickett!!!

It wasn’t until I was reaching to put — what I now know was not my toothbrush — back in it’s place, that I realized what I had done.

Double G-GROSS!

I just used the toothbrush of a 10 year old!

“Get over it!”, you say. “Grow up!?!?!!”

All fine and dandy except for the fact that, at 10 years old they are still walking petrie dishes. The girl has been battling a cold and I have been careful not to catch it.

And let us not forget that the fact that:

I am a HUGE germ-a-phobe. Yuck!

Here’s the thing –

ten years ago, I gave birth to myself. She has no idea that I made this mistake and when she reads this post, well –

Can you say:

Resuscitate?!

So That This Time Next Year:

According to Dennis Waitley,

“There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension. One of these days is Yesterday, with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone.

The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow, with its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise, and poor performance. Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control. Tomorrow’s sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds; but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is as yet unborn. This leaves only one day: Today.”

There Is Noise In My Head

Dana @ 8:34 AM | Filed under: General

Is it just me or:

Don’t you hate it too, when the cashier gives you the receipt mixed in with your change?

Who has time to stand there and sort all of that out? People waiting impatiently behind you but –

you,ve got to separate all of that before you walk away from the register or it just makes chaos for later.

They should come up with a new system for dispensing your change that doesn’t involve giving you your receipt mixed in with your bills, right?

Ya know what?

Nevermind.

It is just me.
