Yes I Can't
I like to know ahead of time if a story has a happy ending so sometimes I cheat and fast forward to the end of the movie or I turn first, to the last page in the book. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way in real life. Try as we might, it's impossible to know ahead of time how things will turn out in the end and we can't anticipate with any accuracy the things we might encounter along the way.
Between the first scene and that last line, between "Once upon a time" and "They lived happily ever after" is when all hell usually breaks loose -- just like in real life. And, just like in real life, the middle is the mystery; the place where the adventure plays out. The beginning is when we can choose to opt in. In the end is where we look back triumphant. But, the agony of not knowing how or whether every little thing will be alright -
happens in between.
My eager hand shoots skyward with authority when she surveys the room for a volunteer. I am feeling lucky as I imagine that I might actually hear her say my name this time. I concentrate hard in an effort to increase my chances - hoping and quite frankly, fully expecting, so when she calls my name, I'm not at all surprised.
I stand up victoriously and head to the back of the class room. Every one of those other fifth graders watches me with envy. I dutifully accept my prize -- two fat and furry guinea pigs - as I proudly agree to assume my responsibilities -- to take those guinea pigs home for the weekend with the pledge of getting them back to school safe and sound on Monday morning. In this moment, I feel like there's nothing I can't do.
But I will soon discover that winning the right to take care of a couple of guinea pigs for the weekend was not at all what I thought it was cracked up to be. I imagined in the beginning that I would be the hero at home, worshipped by my brothers and sisters for my fearless abandon as I handled those pigs like a pro, admired and appreciated by my classmates upon my Monday morning return.
What I could not anticipate however, was that home alone after school, beyond the borders of my classroom, without my teacher and those kids looking on, those pigs would scare me half to death, escape from my grip, assume the run of the house, force me to seek refuge in the bathroom, reduce me to a screaming cry baby who now needed to be rescued by Brenda Roley's mom who could hear my drama playing out from next door.
Caught somewhere between, "I can conquer the world" and "What in the world was I thinking", the desire to somehow rewind the clock, erase the tape and lobby somebody, anybody for a do-over was overwhelming because -
All hell had just broken loose!
Imagine.
Somehow those guinea pigs seemed a lot less scary at school. With all the kids standing around the cage fighting for a turn to hold them, I was confident. When the teacher called my name I could imagine, with certainty, returning to school on Monday proud that I had done a good job. Only, trapped in the bathroom, I couldn't figure out how the heck I would ever get to the end of what was supposed to have been a good time.
And you?
Have you ever started out excited and confident about doing something, heading toward a happy ending because that is the way we are taught its s'posed to turn out, only to find yourself caught in the middle of it? Feeling in the beginning like there's nothing you can't do, it's easy to imagine yourself the hero in the end. Trapped now and on your own, might you secretly be hoping to be rescued by anyone who might somehow notice that you need a little help? Forced to question your initial resolve, will you choose to stay in 'til the end?
Mrs. Roley helped me round up those guinea pigs and she stayed with me until my mother got home, and although I never fully got over my fear of holding small domesticated little rodents, I did manage to rise to the occasion and honor my commitment and I was, in the end, applauded on Monday at school.
Finding yourself in the middle of what only used to seem like a good idea and one that you hope can still turn out okay, is a pivotal place to be. It's where we question why we ever said "yes" in the first place and it's often where we grow.
In the end the opportunity to look back, triumphant will emerge and the chance to acknowledge with pride that we survived, that we did what had to be done, will establish deep within us the desire to -
say "yes" all over again.

Have a great week!
Marketing Communications Pioneer and Author, Tom Burrell
Marketing communications pioneer, founder and former CEO of Burrell Communications, and Advertising Hall of Fame inductee, Tom Burrell is credited with revolutionizing the image of African Americans in television and changing the face of American advertising.
During his tenure as a top advertising executive, he coined the now-famous phrase, "Black people are not dark-skinned white people." His award-winning work promoted positive and
realistic images of Blacks and acknowledged the purchasing power of the African American community. In 2007, Burrell founded the Resolution Project, www.theresolutionproject.us, a
nonprofit organization that promotes intra-racial dialogue and community-based new media "stop the brainwash" campaigns. He lives in Chicago's South Loop area. BRAINWASHED:
Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority is his first book.
Tom Burrell is someone who tells it like it is and his new book Brainwashed is America's wake up call. Brainwashed provides a valuable opportunity for us to deal constructively with one of our ugly and unfortunate legacies; to finally talk about the elephant in the room in a way that could finally make a difference...
DR: Tell me about Brainwashed.
TB: America has been sold a bill of goods.
The myth of Black inferiority is a lie that was created in order to justify the existence of this nation. This nation had to embrace slavery in order to have a democracy. Now those are two contradictory terms, "slavery" and "democracy". If indeed democracy is based on the idea that "All men are created equal" how then do you justify this contradiction? Well, somebody had the bright idea, a good marketing guy, to sell the idea that "Black people are sub-human". That way we can carry out our plan to have this democracy based on freedom, justice and the idea that "all men are created equal" and still have slaves.
Having said that, here comes the big challenge:
It's easy to say it but now you have to prove it and reinforce it and make the myth a reality -
and thus was born the greatest marketing communications scam of our history:
The selling of Black inferiority
It's hard for people to understand me when I say that slavery was not our problem. Our problem was...

Anti Iraq War Speech delivered by Illinois State Senator Barack Obama
On Wednesday October 2, 2002, then Illinois Senator Barack Obama took a stand against the War in Iraq when few others would take that stand. On Friday February 27, 2009, President Barack Obama, announced the end of that same war...
Wednesday October 2, 2002
The Federal Plaza in Chicago
Good afternoon. Let begin by saying that although this has been billed as an anti-war rally, I stand before you as someone who is not opposed to war in all circumstances.
The Civil War was one of the bloodiest in history, and yet it was only through the crucible of the sword, the sacrifice of multitudes, that we could begin to perfect this union, and drive the scourge of slavery from our soil.
I don't oppose all wars.
My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton's army. He saw the dead and dying across the fields of Europe; he heard the stories of fellow troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka. He fought in the name of a larger freedom, part of that arsenal of democracy that triumphed over evil, and he did not fight in vain.
I don't oppose all wars.
After September 11th, after witnessing the carnage and destruction, the dust and the tears, I supported this Administrations pledge to hunt down and root out those who would slaughter innocents in the name of intolerance, and I would willingly take up arms myself to prevent such tragedy from happening again.
I don't oppose all wars.
And I know that in this crowd today, there is no shortage of patriots, or of patriotism.
What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perles and Paul Wolfowitz and other arm-chair, weekend warriors in this Administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne.
What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like Karl Roves to...

Don't Get It Confused
Have you ever reached a point where you've just got to "go there"? Do you know what I mean? I mean -
that point where you just have to let somebody know who they're dealing with.
If you are a basketball fan then you know who Bill Russell is - one of the greatest basketball players of all time. If you are a hardcore basketball fan then you know that Red Auerbach was one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time.
Red Auerbach coached Bill Russell when he played for Boston Celtics.
In the early stages of Russell's NBA career, Coach Auerbach recognized the unlimited potential that Russell possessed. Auerbach also saw that Bill Russell would compromise his ultimate potential if Russell continued to allow players to physically punish and push him around on the court. Russell was a rookie and the veterans were taking full advantage of that fact.
Red coached Russell that:
If you want to be a great player in the NBA you're going have to let the rest of the league know. You're going to have to let them know that you can get aggressive, take a stand and fight back - if you have to.
Bill Russell was known as a nice guy. It was not his nature, necessarily, to demonstrate aggressive behavior on the court. But, he took the coaching anyway, because that's the kind of player he was.
In a subsequent game, played on national television, Bill Russell understood what he finally had to do. During a heated moment, Russell threw a forceful elbow, just as he was coached to do, that sent a message loud and clear - on national television, letting everybody know that he could "go there"
Nice guy, only now people were clear about who they were dealing with.
That's my two cents (for whatever it's worth),

This Is NPR: The First Forty Years by NPR
Why I am recommending this book:
NPR is a true American treasure and one that should be celebrated by taking some time to reflect on how it started and how it has evolved. NPR has also included DVDs, which include broadcasts of some of their most memorable stories.

This celebration of National Public Radio comes in a snappy magazine style, full of short histories from familiar names. NPR's shaky start was fortified by the devotion of the few staffers working out of a small office in D.C. The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 only included radio because of a push from broadcast veterans at the University of Michigan, but the CPB set aside a paltry 10% of funds for Public Radio. Stories such as these remind us that NPR existed, and exists, as a way for everyday voices to explain the world, rather than the stentorian tones of broadcast news. Sylvia Poggioli, Nina Totenberg, Renee Montagne, Cokie Roberts (who suggested that NPR attracted so many talented women because salaries were too low for men), and others were on the front lines of war coverage, reporting from Rwanda to Bosnia to Afghanistan; as a former NPR senior foreign editor put it, "You really never saw a reporting team made up mostly of women." It's fitting that the women, and the men, who built NPR should be the ones to present this retrospective illustrating just how much they have given us.
