My Two Cents: Put Up

Auguste Roc

“I can hear the drums banging, but I never see the troops coming over the wall,” I think out loud as I recall a childhood story.

I remember this fellow, back in the day, back in the neighborhood, who became famous for talking about what he could do. He was always talking about what a good athlete he was --

He talked a real good game!

I remember that, from the very first time that he showed up at the park where we would gather to play ball, all he did was talk about his abilities; all about his skills.

At first, we all believed that his talk was true; that he was as good as he said. But, after awhile he became known as

“The Playground Legend”.

After awhile, there was a buzz about him being all talk and no action, and all the kids that considered themselves to be “players” began to show up looking to find out what this guy was made of, because --

He talked a real good game!

But, he was never willing to get on the court.

In any game in life, whether work or play, don’t set an expectation unless you intend to deliver. Get on the court, the field, the phone, whatever it is and --

Perform.

Talking is good because it sets your stage; it puts all eyes on you, and sets up the expectation that you have what it takes. And, you do, so did he, but you have to follow through.

When the stage is set and all eyes are on you – show up and bring your A-game. Anything short of that might cost you your reputation.

You’ve got to talk a good game, otherwise life is just boring. Just make sure that when it’s time to deliver,

You do.

That’s my two cents (for whatever it’s worth),
