My Two Cents: Are you hearing footsteps?

Auguste Roc

You brace yourself for that lethal hit. You shut your eyes and cringe for the death blow, but -- the vicious collision never comes.

Are you hearing footsteps?

You open your eyes in horror. All you see is the ball deflecting off your outstretched fingers traveling in slow motion far away from you. All you hear are the groans of the thousands reacting to your missed opportunity. The difficult thing to face is that:

All the while you were standing wide open and --

without a defender within twenty yards of you. But you just knew, in fact you were certain, that the opposition was close and ready to attack.

Are you hearing footsteps?

Coming right at you, fast and furious and with bad intentions – footsteps.

In football, “hearing footsteps”, is used to describe a player that is so mentally consumed with the possibility of the debilitating impact of the tackle, that he begins to imagine he is about to be opposed; about to be crushed, even when there is nobody there.

Imagine yourself, in life, in whatever GAME you play, focused on an enemy that isn’t really there. Devastated in your mind, failure will quickly become your reality. You just missed an opportunity, you didn’t see a possibility because you feared something, that you only imagined was there.

Are you hearing footsteps?

“Hearing footsteps” causes fumbled balls, dropped passes, missed opportunities.

Open your “eyes” and look to see what is really there and enjoy the cheering where there once were groans!

That’s my two cent’s (for whatever it’s worth),
